Job Description

The mission of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

The primary purpose of the position is to cultivate, oversee and direct clinical operations for the MD Anderson Cancer Network, including the organization of operational leadership and resources internally at MD Anderson in Houston and externally at all Cancer Network locations, including our national Partner programs. This position also supports deployment of operational resources in other areas of Cancer Network's portfolio, including Global Oncology, the Research Network, and consulting and advisory relationships with external health systems and hospitals. Leads the operational evaluation of network programs locally, nationally, and internationally. Serves as content expert and primary leader for operations coordination between MD Anderson and network partners. Develops and maintains collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders within Cancer Network and across the institution.

Key Functions

1. Contributes to the development of strategic plans of the Cancer Network and its relationships especially with regard to clinical programs and operations.

2. Contributes to the development efforts of new Cancer Network relationships as related to clinical operations, needs, and strategies.

3. Is involved in the entire spectrum of the MD Anderson Cancer Network, including Partner members, assessment and pre-operations for potential Partner members, consulting and advisory relationships with external health systems and hospitals, Cancer Network's Quality platform, the Global Oncology program, and Cancer Network Clinical Research program.

4. Develops special programs and products for the Cancer Network, including Cancer Prevention, Survivorship, Integrative Medicine, Stem Cell Transplant, and Palliative Care.

5. Supports the MD Anderson clinical enterprise through Network integration such as educational programs, Multidisciplinary Conferences, referral of patients from Partner programs including for clinical trial consideration or specialty care, clinical Peer-to-Peer program and Pathology second opinion program.

6. Assures that clinical and operational needs of Cancer Network relationships are met.

7. Contributes to the budget process related to Cancer Network clinical operations.

8. Leads the coordination of all supportive non-faculty efforts in the Cancer Network to include nursing, pharmacy, physics, and clinical operations.

9. Responsible for leading the execution of projects as directed by the Chief Cancer Network Officer.

10. Facilitates the coordination of non-faculty with effort allocation within the network to include a) pre-Partner assessment process, 2) pre-Partner pre-operations, and 3) Partner operations.

11. Oversees and coordinates the yearly network conference across all Partners.

12. Assesses existing network operations and identifies improvements consistent with mission and strategic business objectives.

13. Responds to day-to-day operational issues with Cancer Network Partners.

14. Produces operations assessment reports to the Cancer Network members.

15. Participates in building Cancer Network support programs, as directed by the Chief Cancer Network Officer, including operational, quality tools, and support tools, virtual multidisciplinary conferences/tumor boards, and digital imaging and pathology solutions.

16. Participates in the recruitment of leadership positions for Cancer Network Partners.

17. Works across Cancer Network and MD Anderson on quality efforts to ensure a consistent program is provided at all locations reflective of MD Anderson standards.

18. Manages HR issues and enforces institutional policies with reporting staff and in external relationships.

19. Participates in design and contributes to developing strategic plans to advance clinical and academic objectives of the Cancer Network. Develops educational objectives in collaboration with Cancer Network Medical and Academic Affairs leadership, research objectives in collaboration with Cancer Network Research leadership, and global oncology objectives in collaboration with Global Oncology leadership.

20. Serves as primary liaison between Cancer Network Clinical Operations and MD Anderson Clinical Operations.

21. Identifies and cultivates a group of MD Anderson operations subject matter experts, who will appropriately support the objectives of, and provide service to, all Cancer Network locations, products, and members, including Cancer Network partners.

22. Collaborates with the institutional Chief Quality and Value Officer and Chief Administrative Quality Officer to support the implementation of the Cancer Network quality program.

23. Represents Cancer Network externally with physician and administrative leadership at Cancer Network sites.

24. Travels as needed to sites outside of Houston and Texas and (infrequently) internationally; and upon return, completes analysis and presentation of data and findings.

Education and certifications

Education: MD/DO with applicable board certification by an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) approved specialty board or RN, APP with Master's degree in Business/Healthcare or Master's degree in Business/Healthcare related field.

Academic Rank (for MD/DO applicants only): Candidates must qualify for appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher at MD Anderson. The effort allocation for this position will be up to 70% administrative and it will maintain faculty academic appointment as well (faculty administrator).

EXPERIENCE

Eight years experience in an academic healthcare environment to include hospital/clinical operations experience. Three years of experience in a formal leadership role is required for MD/DO candidates and five years is required for RN, APP with Master's degree and for Master's degree in Business/Healthcare related field. Leadership experience must reflect expansion of role, scope and complexity over time.
